Frequently Asked Questions

Will the system work at my location?

Yes ... No ... and Maybe! You are assigned the same satellite for the lifetime of your contract. You are then able to establish a connection to the Internet from any site that has a clear view of the Southeastern sky in the lower 48 states. Southern Canada, Alaska and Mexico may be available.

Disclaimer: Not all satellites in the Hughes inventory cover the entire USA. Please ask before purchasing.

Do I need a telephone to use the HughesNet system?
No, a telephone is not required.

Do I have to be certified to aim my dish?

No, but FCC Regulations recommend that people aiming a dish be trained. Our training documentation includes a 60-page illustrated Training Manual with a complete Troubleshooting section, a computer and satellite equipment checklist, and telephone support.

Note: On the www.fcc.com website, search for OET Bulletin 65C, Evaluating Compliance with FCC Guidelines for Human Exposure to Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Fields, see page 23. [This FCC recommendation really applies only to transmitters that are rated over 2.5 watts . . .the HughesNet HN7000S transmitter is rated at 1 watt for consumer accounts and 2 watt for business accounts.]

Is it true that RVers cannot use the system?

No! Tens of thousands of RVers have been using their portable systems every day for about the last five years.

If you call HughesNet...their sales staff will tell you that their systems are fixed installations only and are not available for RVs, and this is correct. You cannot purchase a system for your RV from HughesNet directly. This is because HughesNet does not provide pointing or setup support for portable units of any kind, whether you pay $6000 for the automatic roof-mounted antenna or $2000 for a tripod-mounted system.

The company that sells you the portable system is responsible for its support, whether it is GroundControl for a rooftop system or Maxwell Satellite for a PortaSat tripod system. This is an important point, so choose an installer that offers the best support.

Once you are online (or have correctly pointed your dish), HughesNet fully supports any Internet service issue.

Can the Internet service be suspended during the months when we are not using our RV & turned back on when we start traveling again?
Yes, there is a "snowbird" suspension program in effect. You can suspend your service up to a total of 6 months per year.

Can I move the dish frequently?

Yes! Thousands of RVers are setting up their tripod-mounted dishes every day and re-aiming them. HughesNet is pleased to have you use their system if you aim your dish correctly and pay your bill on time. HughesNet, however, is not prepared to support you if you have problems aiming your dish. This support service is performed by the company from whom you purchased your portable system. HughesNet does support all other aspects of their Internet service, 24x7.

Does HughesNet provide a warranty on the equipment?

Are there disadvantages to a roof-mounted antenna?

We prefer the flexibility of a tripod-based portable system, particularly since we are fulltimers. We never know where we will be parking our 40-foot motorhome tomorrow or next month. A tripod-based system allows us to move the dish anywhere we need to in order to find the satellite. If we had a roof-mounted system in a heavily treed area we would be without Internet service, besides we like to park in the shade during the summer.

How hard is it to set up your tripod-based PortaSat Internet system?

It may take you up to an hour and a half the first time and only about 15 minutes after you have done it a few times. Visit our "How it Works" webpage for an illustration of the setup process.

Note: This timing is based on two people working together, one setting up the hardware, the other handling the software process. Add another 15 minutes (or not) to the setup process if one person handles both areas. That said, the Setup Champion at our last Maxwell Satellite Rally broke the record at 11 minutes working alone.

We include with all our systems:
Our copyrighted Training Manual - containing illustrated step-by-step instructions - is tested to be virtually idiot proof
First-time setup guide, computer configuration checklist, and an illustrated flow chart for the entire setup process
Customers Only support section on our website available 24/7
To make it even easier, our products come equipped with the Outdoor Pointing Interface (OPI) which displays the signal strength at the dish to assist in the fine-tuning phase

USA Telephone support for portability issues, 8 AM to 8 PM Pacific Time, 7 days a week...Computer configuration help available - $50 per hour

Can I use my Mac with this system? Will I be able to network all my computers?

Yes! The PortaSat is computer independent. Using a router, you can network 2 computers (Windows, Apple, or Linux operating systems) on the Residential service plan without degrading the speed. Higher level service plans are available for larger networking applications. Visit How It Works for a graphical illustration.

What about Wireless?

Yes! You can set up a wireless system (using a router) within your rig to connect several computers together. Keep in mind that a wireless connection is not very secure. The use of encryption is highly recommended. Please research this area before deciding which technology to use. The Customers Only section of our website contains several "must read" documents on this subject. Visit How It Works for a graphical illustration.

Can I make telephone calls (VoIP) using this Residential Internet service ?

Yes, you can. That said, the ProPlus HughesNet Internet service level is a better choice if you are planning to use VoIP.

There is a delay, so the conversation is very much like using a CB radio. However, new technology has just been introduced this year that changes the marketplace for VoIP. Lots of information out there, so go find it before you make a choice on VoIP. See our review of VoIP products that our customers are using.

Can I get DirecTV on the same antenna that I use for Internet?

A

No. The DirecTV bracket/LNB for the Internet antenna is no longer available.

The solution we found was to carry the usual 18" TV dish and purchase a small tripod (Radio Shack sells them). DirecTV or Dish Network would then be available with as many LNBs as you need (HDTV also). This arrangement also gives the RVer more flexibility in treed areas.

Can I get Internet service using the small TV antenna I already have?
A
No. Internet service requires a much bigger antenna because of the dual transmit/receive capabilities and the low wattage of the transmitter (1 watt).
